Starbucks: Pop Culture Icon

Source: https://www.haikudeck.com/local-vs-culture--education-presentation-QjfEgwS9kD#slide-17

Popular culture refers to products, films, books, music, sports, or other forms that appeal to the masses. Popular culture appeals to the senses and emotions rather than the intellect.

For most businesses, knowledge of popular culture helps provide products and services that will appeal to the masses. Knowing what the general public will like or be drawn to will help advance the careers of many business people.

I think Starbucks can be a good example of an artifact of popular culture.  Although Starbucks started out as a niche market, over the years it has grown to appeal to a much broader customer base. Starbucks not only sits on the streets of large cities, but also on the streets of small towns.  It fulfills people need for gathering in a community or social setting. I would say also that Starbucks has become so much a pop culture icon that even other businesses, such as McDonald’s offers Starbucks-like drinks with Starbucks-like names (e.g., caramel latte).

  1. Oh how i love Starbucks!!! they take most of my paycheck, but its worth it. I get the mocha cookie crumble frappe with a shot of espresso and extra chocolate/large. Starbucks literally gets me through the day, if i don't get my frappe in the am my day usually goes wrong. But i enjoyed reading your blog, great popular culture artifact that is booming now and probably forever!!!

  2. Yes, Starbucks is very popular, I work with co-workers you just can-not function if they do not have their Starbucks to get them through the day. Starbucks gives the people want they want and how they want it, they know what sales and what do not. Starbucks coffee is such a popular product that you can it in most stores now also, Starbucks is definitely a popular culture.

  3. I guess Starbucks is one of the popular places i heard the first time i got into US. I have seen that most people cannot go through the day especially in the morning without passing by to grab either coffee or a cookie to kick start their day. In my opinion, i think Starbucks will run in the market for a quiet a while.

  4. UB; I agree with you on your definition of pop culture. I feel culture is an universal feeling of our attitudes, ideals.likes, and dislikes of life's processes of dealing with happiness.sadness, enjoyment, curiosity, and the challenges we go thought to achieve our dreams, and ambitions. Starbucks has met all those goals and some. It truly is a staple of popular culture, and lets face it who doesn't like coffee, or tea !
